This festival falls on the first week of September. This festival is celebrated in honor of Indradev, the king of heaven and the one to lead the Gods of rain, water, fire, wind, etc. Both Hindus and Buddhists unite to celebrate the festival of Indra Jatra with great enthusiasm. This festival is celebrated in a carnival like fashion by erection and procession of the Yashina linga, a ceremonial pole and the rare display of Ashok Swet Vairab.
The Kumari ,living goddess of Kathmandu, leaves the seclusion of her temple in a palanquin and leads a procession through the streets of Kathmandu to thank Indradev. The main attraction of the festival is the procession of Ganesh,Kumar and Kumari chariots and masked dancers representing deities and demons.
