Travel Nepal in August

August: Travel Nepal in August

This is the last month of the Monsoon season in Nepal. Travel is possible although it is not  the best month to travel Nepal. For trekkers, this is still not the best  time, but if you are  coming to Nepal, this month for a trek than it is best to take a  flight from Kathmandu to  Lukla, Jomsom and Jumla and trek above the leech line.

It is also good to trek to recently opened restricted areas for this monsoon/summer trek,  since these restricted areas i.e. Mustang and Simikot are partially in the Himalayan rain shadow. However, most of the restricted area treks are impossible during the winter season.

In the Kathmandu valley most mornings are foggy and evenings are clear. Rains generally comes at night though in regular basis. Chitwan’s rainfall slightly increases whereas Pokhara’s rain will start decreasing gradually.

If you are in Kathmandu this month, don’t miss the Gai- Jatra festival, where you will see lots of boys (kid and teens) roaming around the city and road with funny face paintings and dress up.

Janai Purnima is also another significant Nepali festival that falls under this month. Visit the Pashupatinath temple or the Gokarna temple on this day to see Nepali Hindu men perform the Janai changing ritual and get a protective Janai from Hindu priest for yourself too. Or join with the Hindu pilgrims to the Gosaikunda lake trek.Have a taste of Kwati, the infamous Newari dish prepared for this day specially. Kwati is a rich soup made with mix of 9 kinds of beans and it is said to be good for cold and strength if eaten this day.
