This is festival is also called Buddha Purnima. It falls on the late May, in Nepali calendar, second full moon day of the first month Vaisakh. This day is celebrated to commemorate birth, attainment of knowledge, and the death of Lord Buddha, which are believed to have happened on this very same day. Thus, it is regarded as the most auspicious and important day in the year by the Buddhist.
The day is marked with prayer meets, sermons on the life of Gautam Buddha, religious discourses, continuous recitation of Buddhist scriptures, group meditation, processions, worship of the statue of Buddha and symposia. All the Stupas and Monasteries of the country wear festive look and is decorated with colors, flowers and flags. A big fair is held in Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, Boudhnath, Swoyambhunath stupa of the valley and Namobudhha monasteries.
